Dive into Ireland’s rich military heritage with a guided tour of the James Stephens Military Barracks Museum, led by Comdt (retired) Larry Scallan. From 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM on Tuesday 17th March 2026 to explore this historic site and uncover the fascinating stories of Ireland’s Defence Forces and their contributions to the nation’s history.

The James Stephens Military Barracks, established in the 19th century, has played a pivotal role in Irish history, serving as a key site during significant events such as the War of Independence and the Civil War. Now a repository of military artifacts and memorabilia, the museum offers a unique glimpse into the evolution of the Irish Defence Forces, from their origins to their modern-day peacekeeping missions worldwide.

Guided by Comdt Scallan, a retired officer with years of service and expertise, visitors will learn about the lives of soldiers who served here, the barracks’ strategic importance, and the broader role of the Defence Forces in shaping Ireland’s sovereignty and international reputation.

Location: James Stephens Military Barracks (Meeting Point: Main Gate, Ballybought Street)

Comdt (retired) Larry Scallan will also be hosting two historical talks over the weekend on The National Flag on Saturday 14th and James Stephens on Sunday 15th both in The Parade Tower, Kilkenny City. Pre-booking for all events required.
